Calpurnia Virginia Tate is eleven years old in 1899 when she wonders why the yellow grasshoppers in her Texas backyard are so much bigger than the green ones. With a little help from her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist, she figures out that the green grasshoppers are easier to see against the yellow grass, so they are eaten before they can get any larger. As Callie explores the natural world around her, she develops a close relationship with her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and comes up against just what it means to be a girl at the turn of the century.
Debut author Jacqueline Kelly deftly brings Callie and her family to life, capturing a year of growing up with unique sensitivity and a wry wit.
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book and the winner of the 2010 Bank Street - Josette Frank Award. This title has Common Core connections.

I think that I would read this book over and over again and again.
not my favorite book
Loved It!!! (What I have read of it) Was Awesome!!!
Eh, Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is ok. It's not the best book I've ever read, but like I said, it's ok. It talks about the old fashioned times and it is so….. Boring! It is so slow and makes no sense unless you read it about three times. SOME chapters are sweet, however the rest of the chapters are odd, or not amusing. Sorry Jacqueline Kelly but, it isn't that good. No affence. :(
I thought this book was amazing! (I'm doing a second one because I forgot my password to the other account :/, oops) But, I thought I should write a more in depth review. So, this book was actually kind of boring at first, not going to lie. The book eventually caught up with some of the action towards the fourth or fifth chapter. The book is soooooo interesting. I always like to read what happens next. When I was first handed this book, I was quite confused. I had no idea what the story would be about. The cover kind of reminded me of another story, called "The Boxcar Children." I don't know why it reminded me of that, probably just the way the fonts were and the painting on the cover, but I'm not sure. I think many people who read this will enjoy it as much as I did! :)
